Blair Athol Distillery

This was my first view of the Blair Athol Whisky Distillery in Pitlochry, Scotland.
The name "Blair Athol" comes from the Gaelic "Blar Ath Fhoda" which translates into English as "The Plain of the New Ireland". The Scots were a Celtic people who originated in northern Ulster, landing on the west of Scotland in the sixth century BC and establishing the kingdom of Dalriada. From Dalriada, the Scots emigrated to the more fertile plains of Pictland, especially the lands of Ath Fotla, and this is probably when the name "Second Ireland" originated. Thus the name Blar Ath Fhodla came into being, which today is know as Blair Athol.
Edradour Whiskey Distillery

Edradour claims to be the smallest traditional whiskey distillery in Scotland. Now I’m no fan of whiskey, but the distillery itself is absolutely the most charming little place I visited during my two year stay in Scotland.

the end of an era: our little club – whisky men united – met for gathering #5 and drank the cellar dry of the 13 single malt scotch whiskys we’ve been sampling over the past year.

Absolutely loved the set up for this drink pairing. See that fitted glass bottle sitting over the whiskey glass? it was filled with water (so no shot glass or "separate" water jug required) for us to dilute (or open up) the scotch.
Maybe little things amuse me, but I thought this was great, particularly in service. That or I need to get out more as this was my first encounter with this double decker vessel. (I’ve seen this with tea pots over tea cups, but not for alcoholic beverages).

Based in the Greenbrier Valley of West Virginia, the small batch distiller is now recognized as an Artisan Merchant Bottler. While Smooth Ambler is a distiller of spirits that first made their name by creating true grain to glass spirits, their most recent artisan spirit, Old Scout, is a curated or sourced whiskey. This means Old Scout is offered by Smooth Ambler to complement their current family of handmade spirits, which are set to age but not yet mature enough to bottle.
Lots of the products on the shelf are made by someone other than the name on the label. The difference is that we tell people we “scout” or source this product, began John Little, VP of Smooth Ambler Spirits. It’s really helped us enter the market sooner as our handmade spirits continue their aging process. After all, we aren’t trying to make the next whatever-flavored vodka and pouring shots, we’re trying to build a brand of quality.
Smooth Ambler will be touring Old Scout in Louisiana, with a visit to both Baton Rouge and New Orleans. Baton Rouge restaurant Beausoleil, which has been serving Smooth Ambler cocktails for the last year, will be holding a spirit pairing dinner Wednesday evening beginning at 6:30. Louisiana distributor Purveyors of Fine Wine will also be hosting Smooth Ambler for an event Thursday evening.
