Few Inspirations in the Emerald City

Seattle, WA (PRWEB) March 08, 2012

FEW Spirits, has recently found a home for their exceptional small-batch spirits in Seattle, Washington.

Motivated by the enigmatic inspiration of the Temperance movement, FEW Spirits creates tradition through timeless liquors that are barreled and bottled in-house.

Two fine dining venues located in the heart of western Washington are fortunate to welcome FEW Spirits White Whiskey, American Gin, Rye Whiskey, and Bourbon Whiskey in to their menu.

The first of the two, Re:Public, was recently voted as the #1 New Restaurant in Western Washington by Evening Magazine. It has been described as both the latest It restaurant bar as well as having no less than high-density blocks of surging businesses. Rhuadri McCormick, whose family owns Kells Irish Restaurant and Pub and who himself opened Post along with co-owner Hannes Schindler, another partner in Re:Public, is introducing seven new FEW cocktails to be featured on the menu this season. The third co-owner, Matthew Greenup, was one of the founders of Mission Latin Restaurant and Lounge in West Seattle. Chef Martin Woods, an alumnus of Cantinetta and Bastille, provides the foundation for a unforgettable cuisine to complement a FEW spirit of choice.

The second metropolitan-Seattle lounge is found at Toulouse Petit, a tasteful dining experience chosen by CNBCs nation-wide survey as one of the Ten Best Happy Hours in the Nation. Chefs Eric Donnelly and Brian Hutmacher have fostered an environment in which Toulouse Petit has come to be illustrated as A Queen Ann favorite featuring Seattles best happy hour, New Orleans cuisine, and a fabulous cocktail list. On that fabulous cocktail list is now the FEW Bloody Mary, made with FEWs bottled-before-it-meets-the-barrel acclaimed White Whiskey. Yes, the same White Whiskey that won the Double Gold at the New York International Wine & Spirits and the Gold at the International Review of Spirits this past year.

FEW Spirits has been critically acclaimed by many, as well as featured in both the Chicago Tribune and Whisky Magazine, among other fine publications. Additionally, FEW has received many positive acclamations, including the aforementioned awards at the New York International Wine & Spirits Competition and International Review of Spirits, as well as a “Highly Recommended” rating from the Beverage Tasting Institute.

Whisky tasting

A few nice whisky news images I found:

Thanks, Elad, for organizing.

Since whisky melts paper cups (try it), I busted out my copy of Ellen’s Widget Bitch / UI Designer mug (buy your own) and sampled the three arranged Scotches.

I started with the unfiltered Glen Rothes, which was very smooth. Next was the Bruichladdich, which I would not recommend without cutting with water: it was very strong and sharp. Finally, I sipped the Glenfarclas, which I had avoided due to a cheesy label, but I liked this one better by far.

Here’s to scotch, scotch tasting, and the launch of Google News Mobile.

As it will take over five years for 1 person to get by way of one cask at a bottle per week, remembering that this is at cask strength which is a lot more like 1½ bottles at 40%, it follows therefore that a syndicate of 5 could organise 1 cask per year among them and have a regular supply with far more variety.

Whiskey in the Jar

Ah, whiskey. In my eyes, the nectar of the gods, the divine result of distilled grains and cask aging that creates a lovely liquor to enjoy.  There are many kinds of whiskey, from so many countries. It is produced in Ireland, Scotland, Germany, The United States, Canada and Japan, to name a few. These are the most prolific places of production. I personally enjoy all types of whiskey, but this article, along with my tastes, will concentrate on the method and tastes of Ireland.

The name whiskey comes from the shortened form of the Irish Gaelic words “uisce beatha” which translates as “water of life”. The art of distilling (the best method of making whiskey) is thought to have come from the Mediterranean to Ireland, via missionaries, in either the 6th or 7th century. Unpeated malt is mixed with a variety of grains, fermented and distilled three times before being stored in wooden casks. The wooden cask is what gives whiskey its distinct flavor. And here is an interesting fact. The whiskey does not mature in the bottle, only in the cask.

There are usually two common types of whiskey from this area. There is the single malt whiskey, which means it comes from one distillery only. Then there is the blended whiskey, a combination of malts and grains to create a particular taste that is associated with a brand or region. Both can have excellent qualities. The single malt tends to be a bit more expensive than the blend style, but great, reasonably priced whiskeys can be found in either area.

To start, Jameson whiskey is one of the most commonly known brands of Irish whiskey on the market. It is a fine whiskey to begin with for those who are getting started with this beverage. It has a yellow coloring, grainy flavor, yet light on the palate. A fairly smooth consistency, it is available almost anywhere. The price ranges from $ 22 to $ 28 for a 750ml bottle.

A slight unknown, but great whiskey to be had is Feckin Irish Whiskey. This a blended whiskey that is golden in hue with oaky overtones and a silky finish. It is a bit harder to locate, but well worth it. For a 750ml bottle, again, expect to pay $ 22 to $ 28.

Another common name in whiskey is Bushmills. Whether you purchase the regular style ($ 25 to $ 30 per 750ml) or the Bushmills Black ($ 32 to $ 38) you can be assured of the consistency of flavor, with a hint of vanilla in the oak tones. This again is readily available and does not disappoint the palate for most consumers.

Finally, for a single malt whiskey, one cannot go wrong with the Knappogue Castle series. Available in many variations, the best ones to locate would be the 1992, the 1994 and the 1995 vintages. Each one can stand alone as a prime example of true Irish whiskey, but each one has it’s own nuances that make it a brand with many varieties. The 1992 vintage is extremely light in color, yet with a smoky and oily feel to the palate. The 1994 has some hints of peach hidden in the wood flavor, while the 1995 combines both vintages into a rich flavor that is unique to this brand. The cost for a Knappogue ranges from $ 35 to $ 45 per 750ml, but is well worth the higher price.

As for how one consumes the whiskey, it is a matter of personal preference. Purists say either drink as is or with a splash of water (which opens up the bouquet and flavor) while other enjoy theirs over a few ice cubes or with a soda water. Whatever your preference may be, explore all options, then find the one that fits your flavor and economic requirements. Do not simply rely upon what experts or decorum say. Nor should you take any opinion as gospel (this one included). Do some research by asking friends and neighborhood liquor stores then discern for yourself. Not all whiskeys are the same, and neither are the consumers. When it comes down to it, drink what you enjoy, then venture from there. You might be surprised at what you find in your travels.
